JAKARTA—President Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. on Wednesday hailed the joint statement issued by the US, Japan, and South Korea on the challenges to security and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region.
The trilateral statement also supported the free and open international order based on the rule of law and opposed any unilateral attempts to change the status quo in the waters of the Indo-Pacific. "We share concerns about actions inconsistent with the rules-based international order, which undermine regional peace and prosperity," the three countries said.
The US, Japan, and Korea also adverted to the 2016 arbitral award which invalidated China's massive historical claims in the West Philippine Sea and which upheld the Philippines exclusive economic zone under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea. The three countries also reaffiemd the importance of peace and stability in Taiwan, which is just north of Luzon.
Apart from ensuring peace in the Indo-Pacific Region, the Philippine leader likewise acknowledged the country’s shared interest in enhancing resilience against maritime disasters.
