PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. announced on Wednesday, November 20, 2024, Mary Jane Veloso ’s upcoming return to the Philippines.“ Mary Jane Veloso is coming home,” Marcos said in a statement.“After over a decade of diplomacy and consultations with the Indonesian government, we managed to delay her execution long enough to reach an agreement to finally bring her back to the Philippines,” he added.
She was sentenced to death in 2015 but was granted temporary reprieve following the surrender of her recruiter, who was charged with illegal recruitment, human trafficking and estafa in relation to Veloso’s case.Over the past years, the Philippine government has repeatedly appealed for grant of executive clemency, pardon, commutation of sentence, or even extradition to serve her sentence in the Philippines for Veloso.
