Tropical cyclone wind signal no. 1 was hoisted late Monday evening in Batanes and other provinces in northern Luzon as ‘Marce’ evolves into a severe tropical storm.
State weather bureau PAGASA warned of intermittent rains across the affected areas as ‘Marce’ underwent rapid intensification. Forecasters expect this tropical cyclone to strengthen further until it reaches typhoon category by Tuesday morning.“On the forecast track, ‘Marce’ may make landfall in the vicinity of Babuyan Islands or mainland northern Cagayan on Thursday evening or Friday early morning,” the agency noted in its 11:00 p.m. advisory.
‘Marce’ was last monitored at 590 kilometers east of Virac, Catanduanes or 715 km east of Daet, Camarines Norte, PAGASA said. It was moving northwestward at 35 km/h with maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h and gusts of up to 125 km/h.
