MANILA, Philippines — Mapua University learned from its past mistakes against defending champion San Beda University, shifting focus from revenge to collective effort.
The Cardinals solved the Red Lions' puzzle with a 58-55 win in the NCAA Season 100 men's basketball tournament.In their first meeting, Mapua head coach Randy Alcantara admitted the team's 'gigil' mentality led to a 69-76 overtime loss. This time, they prioritized teamwork and trust.'We've moved past revenge. We focused on bringing out the best in each other,' Alcantara said. 'Earlier, we were selfish and hesitant. Now, we're more collected.
'Alcantara praised his team's cohesive ball rotation and trust.'Yam's teammates trusted him, and he delivered. That's the trust we've built,' he said.San Beda rallied in the third quarter, narrowing the gap to 46-40. James Payosing tied the game at 49-all, and Bryan Sajonia gave San Beda the lead, 51-49. But Cyrus Cuenco, Concepcion, and Recto combined to secure the victory.
