Australia has three pressing plants riding the vinyl wave, with surging demand meaning there is plenty of work to go around. But competition may be about to get fierce.
Australia is home to triple the number of vinyl pressing plants since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic amidVinyl sales have rocketed in Australia throughout the last decade, with 127,000 12-inch LPs sold in 2012, 374,000 in 2015, 860,000 in 2018, and 1.1 million in the first year of the pandemic, according to ARIA. It has not released figures for 2022 yet, but 958,000 units were sold in 2021, suggesting vinyl may have peaked locally.
“With more capacity coming into the industry and potentially less demand, the million-dollar question is where are we all going to be in 12 months’ time?” “People like buying records to support their favourite artists. At a simple level, it’s a reaction to streaming everything and not owning anything.”
