EVERYTHING there is to know about Manuel Baldemor’s relationship with France lies in the title of his latest solo exhibition.
, branded as a “visual journey” of the accomplished visual artist, alludes not to Baldemor’s indifference to naming particular locations, but underscores how the much-romanticized northwestern European country has inspired him over the decades. So much so that whatever artwork he creates in honor of the place—be it the landscapes, people, or culture—Baldemor is able to convey through his signature simplified geometric forms the vibe and very essence of France.
Baldemor, then a promising mid-20s artist, was coming off back-to-back grand prize wins at the Art Association of the Philippines Art Competition and Exhibition. He drew attention the first year by depicting in pen and ink the beauty of his hometown Paete, Laguna, in a mural titled, which also won the top prize. The remarkable feat earned Baldemor the right to represent the Philippines at the XIV International Art Exhibition in Paris in 1973.
As Baldemor’s art career flourished with several awards and exhibitions over the years, his love for France remained. He would continue to create pieces inspired by the place and the idea it promotes, which he now presents in his ongoing exhibition. Among the featured pieces is his depiction of Paris’ Basilica of Sacré Cœur de Montmartre, or the Sacred Heart of Montamarte, commonly referred to as Sacré-Cœur. Baldemor’s reimagination features his trademark folk style with soft swashes of pastel over the landscape, perhaps signifying the romantic Parisian mood.
