This photo taken on August 22, 2024 shows a traffic surveyor manually counting passing vehicles from a footbridge in Pasig City, Metro Manila. Rain or shine, through floods and car exhaust pollution, some 34 traffic surveyors employed by the city government are deployed to at least 16 major roads in the Philippine capital - their eyes jumping from one car to the next, fingers clicking manual tally counters as they log each passing vehicle.
“We’re happy with this job because we know how important it is. We don’t mind it when people belittle what we do,” Lapriza told Agence France Presse . Lapriza has been at it for 10 years, even though she gets the occasional headache from prolonged exposure to the tropical sun. Vehicle speeds on the avenue, previously notorious for crashes, also improved by 24 seconds over the roughly seven-kilometer stretch.
