The Manila Bulletin Sustainability Forum 2024 gathered key leaders to share and build green efforts at the Institute of Biology Auditorium, University of the Philippines Diliman on Tuesday, November 19.
Key leaders gather to bridge the gap and build partnerships on sustainabilityIt’s easy to feel frustrated and point fingers when facing abnormal weather patterns, especially in the Philippines, a country with the highest disaster risk index for three straight years—lest we forget developing nations face the worst consequences of rich countries’ climate activities. We must indeed demand accountability, but sustainability requires all of us to do our part.
“Over the summer, we endured record high temperatures, with the days scorching hot like never before. Many communities that were previously not prone to floods experience it now. As we equate progress with more concrete structures, most urban areas are now bereft of green spaces,” she said. “They refuse to listen to the call to increase sustainability. So, I hope that in the next year, they will be the only ones we have here at the forum,” she urged. Ayala’s ACEN continues to push for renewable energy, having built 5.3 GW of renewable energy capacity, with solar and wind sources taking the lead. It aims to grow its renewables' capacity to 20 GW by 2030. The company also hinted at potentially retiring the coal plant “earlier than now it’s operating now.
For AboitizPower, it plans to add 3,700 megawatts to its RE portfolio to work toward 4,600 megawatts of clean energy in a balanced mix of sources. It aims for a 35 percent RE share in the country’s power generation mix by 2030 and reaching 50 percent by 2040. Meanwhile, the Development Bank of the Philippines pledged to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 75 percent by 2030. Its Financing Utilities for Sustainable Energy Development program increases access to electricity services by financing utility-scale energy generation projects, including RE and power transmission and distribution efforts.
