TACHIANA MANGIN has brought the Philippines back on the taekwondo map, winning gold in the 2024 World Taekwondo Junior Championships at the Chuncheon Air Dome in Chuncheon, South Korea.
She topped the women’s -49 kgs division by upsetting South Korea’s Kim Hyang-Gi, 2-1, earning the country’s first junior world gold medal since Alex Borromeo won the men’s -47 kgs gold in 1996 in Barcelona, Spain.
Mangin beat Spain’s Judith Cordoba Heredia of Spain, 2-0, and defeated Thailand’s Natkamon Wassana, 2-0, in the preliminary rounds to reach the quarterfinal where she outlasted Habiba Wael Emerah of Egypt, 2-0. “My Korean and Thai opponents were difficult, but tactically I was able to adjust and find some ways to win,” said Mangin, daughter of Ronald and Alona Mangin, both 47.
