CEBU CITY — Mandaue City residents will elect their own representatives to the provincial board of Cebu for the first time, following a Supreme Court ruling that grants the city separate representation as a lone legislative district. Mandaue City election officer Annafleur Gujilde said that the ruling, based on a June 2023 Supreme Court decision, entitles the city to elect two PB members exclusively for Mandaue in the 2025 midterm elections.
This precedent has now been applied to Mandaue.Mandaue's status as a lone district was established in 2019 through Republic Act 11257, signed into law by then-president Rodrigo Duterte. The law allowed the city to have its own representative in Congress and increased the number of members in the Mandaue City Council from 10 to 12.Despite these changes in 2019, Mandaue residents continued to vote for PB members from the sixth district during the 2022 elections.
