The New Zealand Government is pleased to announce that applications for the prestigious Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships will open on February 1st. Funded through the New Zealand International Development Cooperation (IDC) Programme, these scholarships provide talented individuals with the opportunity to pursue postgraduate degrees in New Zealand , commencing in early 2026.
The Manaaki Scholarships, established in the 1950s, have empowered young leaders to make a difference in key areas such as climate change, renewable energy, disaster risk management, and good governance. At its core lies the Māori value of 'manaakitanga'—a commitment to welcoming, respecting, and caring for people. For the 2024 cycle, 16 Filipinos were selected as scholarship recipients and will begin their studies in New Zealand in 2025. These future changemakers address issues ranging from agriculture to peace, gender studies, and more. New Zealand Ambassador to the Philippines Dr. Catherine McIntosh expressed optimism about the future of potential Manaaki Scholars during a media conference in Davao City on January 15th. 'Manaaki New Zealand Scholarships empower problem solvers, change-makers, and highly capable individuals to pursue their potential to become leaders in their communities and countries. Scholars will gain a world-class education, an authentic New Zealand experience, and the tools to help the Philippines achieve the future it deserves,' she stated. Applications will open at 12 am, New Zealand time (7 pm, Philippine time), on Wednesday, February 1st; and will close at 12 pm, New Zealand time (7 am, Philippine time), on February 28th. The scholarships are accessible to eligible candidates from the public, private, and civil society sectors. Interested applicants are encouraged to thoroughly explore the scholarship opportunities available. Successful candidates will embark on their master's or PhD studies in New Zealand in early 2026, joining a global network of leaders dedicated to driving positive change
