JUNE 12 marks the 127th Independence Day of our beloved Philippines. For many, this holiday will be spent resting, or with family.
Although it will be 127 years since our forefathers raised the Philippine flag in Kawit, we must always think of the question, what does independence — freedom — mean? Of course, we all know the universal definition of freedom: being able to do what we want without constraints or restrictions. This definition is generally true, to a certain degree. But freedom, true independence, is attained with the realization that our freedom comes with limits.
It is also the nourishment of both mind and spirit, and not just the stomach, that gives us a purposeful life, full from the freedom we have earned. Laurel again makes a good argument for social responsibility. In his book 'Forces that Make a Nation Great,' he explains that 'social responsibility... shows itself in human sympathy and concern for the welfare of others; it is against exploitation, oppression, extortion, profiteering, plunder and any such anti-social practices.
