MANILA, Philippines — With athletic Barangay Ginebra Jamie Malonzo undergoing surgery last week, his spot is now vacant as Gilas Pilipinas is scheduled to regroup by June 22 to begin preparing for the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
The 6-foot-5 Malonzo tore his calf muscle during the tail end of Ginebra's elimination round schedule in the PBA Philippine Cup. Malonzo has been a key contributor for Cone since the former La Salle wingman was acquired by Ginebra in a three-team trade in September 2022.The 27-year-old Malonzo 's versatility and athleticism have been his assets, as he was tapped to play for Gilas where he averaged 6.5 points and 1.
Gilas team manager Richard del Rosario said they are still discussing with Gilas coach Tim Cone, who could best take Malonzo's spot.'It is still up for discussion with coach Tim. Nothing definite yet,' del Rosario told The Manila Times.
