The Greens are mounting pressure on the government to take urgent action on a looming rental crisis as it establishes an inquiry into deteriorating renters’ rights.

The $10 billion Housing Australia Future Fund bill remains in limbo after the crossbench and the Coalition voted to delay the legislation until October.

“Labor’s housing bill will come back to the parliament in October and we will be waiting to see what the National Cabinet does to give protection to renters,” Mr Bandt said in Parliament House on Thursday. “The Prime Minister got all the premiers and chief ministers around the table to act when power bills were rising, now it’s time to do the same with soaring rents.”

Housing spokesman Max Chandler-Mather said the Greens were willing to negotiate, but reiterated the party’s central concern was giving landlords unlimited scope to raise rents.
