Hundreds of people were evacuated from Moss Landing, California, after a large fire broke out at one of the world's largest battery storage plants. The fire, located at the Vistra Energy-owned Moss Landing Power Plant, sent up towering flames and black smoke. The plant, containing tens of thousands of lithium batteries, is crucial for storing electricity from renewable sources. While authorities believe the fire is contained within the building, the incident highlights the potential dangers of large-scale battery storage facilities. An investigation into the cause of the fire is underway.

Associated PressMOSS LANDING, Calif. — Hundreds of people were ordered to evacuate and part of Highway 1 in Northern California was closed after a major fire erupted at one of the world's largest battery storage plants.

“There’s no way to sugar coat it. This is a disaster, is what it is,” Monterey County Supervisor Glenn Church told. But he said he did not expect the fire to spread beyond the concrete building it was enclosed in. It was unclear what caused this latest fire. Vistra said in a statement that after it was detected, everyone at the site was evacuated safely. After the fire is out, an investigation will begin.
