Phivolcs traced the epicenter of the earthquake at 6 kilometers southwest of Matanao, Davao del Sur, at a shallow depth of 17 km. Its instruments measured the quake at Intensity III in Malungon, Sarangani; Intensity II in Kidapawan City, Cotabato; and Intensity I in Koronadal City, South Cotabato. Phivolcs said the earthquake was tectonic, which means it was caused by the movement of an active fault near the area.
