ART must be creative and should be beyond or must not be confined within the bounds of what may be factual and disciplinal. This may be true, but as we can see through the years, art can spark conversations about history and nationhood.Before the epic Ayala Museum exhibition 'Juan Luna, Painter as Hero' closed, I was asked to do one final lecture for its Encore Programs on March 9, 2024, which I entitled 'Art as Public History: Discourses on Select Juan Luna Paintings.
The 'Spoliarium' was recently in the news again because of the recent sale of a 'boceto' at Salcedo Auctions. We learned from them in connection with the sale that the work was actually inspired by the historical painting done by Luna's Italian painting teacher, Alejo Vera, 'Numancia' 1880, and just looking at the two paintings, the pattern is surprising.
