A low pressure area (LPA) is expected to intensify into a tropical depression to be named 'Egay' in the next 24 hours, the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said on Friday. READ:
Weather specialist Benison Estareja said the weather disturbance was last spotted past 3 a.m. at 950 kilometers east of Southeastern Luzon.Estareja said Egay is the fifth storm to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility this year and second this month.'For now, the weather disturbance is moving westward as it is expected to develop into a storm over the next 24 hours,' Estareja said.By Sunday, the Pagasa forecaster said tropical cyclone wind signals may be raised.
'By Monday or Tuesday, it is also possible to become a severe tropical storm or typhoon as it will head over Northern Luzon where it may make a landfall or re-curve toward the southern island of Japan,' Estareja said.In the meantime, the state-run weather agency said the effect of the southwest monsoon or 'habagat' is getting stronger as it is expected to dump more rains, especially over Mimaropa and Western Visayas.
