Rita Joe lost her own mother when she was five, spending time in foster homes, and was eventually sent to Shubenacadie Residential School.Joe moved to Boston as a teenager, according to her Heritage Day biography. There, she met her husband Frank Joe and they raised a family of 10 children. “She was one of those people that changed our cultural landscape in Nova Scotia. She made native people more visible. She was like an ambassador of our people.”“She said, ‘We're all here to try to make this world a better place,’” Ann said.
