The comfort centre open to the public at the Grand Lake Road Fire Hall is pictured on Saturday afternoon. SHANNON LEE/CAPE BRETON POSTSYDNEY — Comfort centres were set up across the Cape Breton over the weekend to accommodate those affected by extreme cold weather conditions and power outages, but some residents found the opening times too limited.

Because of the extreme cold, with temperatures dipping to -24 C, -40 C and below factoring in the windchill, the Cape Breton Regional Municipality opened two comfort centres — one at the Grand Lake Road Fire Hall between 11 a.m. and 9 p.m., a second at the Boisdale Community Hall from noon to 5 p.m. — to accommodate residents in need.Additionally, the Charlotte Street YMCA offered its facility on Saturday for anyone in need of charging electronic devices and staying warm.

“Our Emergency Management team is in regular contact with Nova Scotia Power regarding outages in the area and what the issue is that’s causing it and what the restoration expectation is,” she said.
