Apartment giant Meriton is using new laws that bypass councils to try and win approval for a controversial redevelopment in south-east Sydney
. It later reduced that to 17 storeys over a larger area, but the council rejected the proposal as a “massive overdevelopment” and “seriously flawed”.“Meriton has already had two humungous bites at the apple,” Randwick’s Labor mayor Dylan Parker said on Thursday.
To qualify, a project in metropolitan Sydney must enable at least 1000 new dwellings and cannot be the subject of an already-active planning proposal. Proponents had until January 22 to apply for the pilot, and if given the green light, they will need to submit their full proposals by May. “In line with the Environmental Planning and Assessment Act, selected planning proposals will either be determined by the minister for planning or the department as his delegate.”
