Peter Dutton has revealed the Liberal Party will formally oppose the Indigenous Voice to Parliament.

Speaking at a press conference in Canberra on Wednesday, Mr Dutton announced that while the party supported legislating local and regional Voices, it would not back a constitutionally enshrined consultative body.

"The Liberal Party seeks to unite our country, we want to make sure we can get the best possible outcomes for Indigenous Australians, and we do that through recognising Indigenous Australians in the Constitution … having a Canberra Voice won’t resolve the issues on the ground for Indigenous communities."Sky News Australia Political Editor Andrew Clennell revealed the party will support legislation to bring on the referendum.

There were five Liberal MPs who spoke against the party's formal position, 10 members in favour, while two remained"on the fence", said Clennell. The five MPs against the party's position were Richard Colbeck, Russell Broadbent, Andrew Bragg, Bridget Archer and Jenny Ware. On Wednesday, Mr Dutton confirmed the Liberal Party will be actively campaigning for the 'No' vote in the lead up to the referendum.
