Working remotely has become a part of many Canadian public service workers’ everyday lives, writes Jim Wilson of Gibsons.

Overall, working remotely has become a part of many Canadian public service workers’ everyday lives. With the pandemic continuing, remote work will likely become even more important in the future.I have been a federal public service worker since 2008. Ever since high school, I felt the need to embark on a career that would allow me to give back to our community.

The programs we fund under the Youth Employment and Skills Strategy serve a very vulnerable population and provide them with the tools they need to transition to employment and become contributing members of society. A key bargaining issue, which is not covered much by the media, is the need to build a more inclusive public service. While this should be a top priority for this government, they have refused our calls for mandatory anti-racism, discrimination and harassment training for all federal workers and managers. We have seen from the Black class-action and Indigenous class-action lawsuits, already underway, that there is institutional and systemic racism and discrimination within the public service.
