Great use for park pavilion I have read your recent article regarding the Victoria Park pavilion and the request by Michael and Shane Pendergast to have ...
The City of Charlottetown's less than encouraging response to Michael Pendergast's proposal to present local musical performances in Victoria Park during the summer raises some questions.
The so-called pavilion is a comparatively large and attractive structure, with all the accessories required for its intended purpose. Anyone driving around the park for the first time might wonder what is the purpose of such a large and impressive building in an otherwise empty field? There is no apparent signage on or near the building indicating what it is. As far as I can recall, there have been very few events held there since it was built. Canada Day comes to mind for one.
Being a musician, I know how hard it is to get venues to perform at before becoming famous. Many Island professional artists got their start in these small community venues. We are now losing small hall venues as they are starting to fade out also. Look back to the JR's Bar days with Stompin' Tom, Gene MacLellan, Anne Murray and many more who got their starts with the help of Johnny Reid.
