Neighbourhood left unprotected As a resident of Charlottetown, who lives in close proximity to the proposed illegal drug usage site on 33 Belmont St., I am ...

Charlottetown’s new overdose prevention site will open at 33 Belmont St. after renovations are complete and new staff are trained. - Logan MacLeanproposed illegal drug usage site on 33 Belmont St.

Due to false promises of the outreach centre, our community has been unfairly subjected to the irrational behaviour of people suffering from addiction, and high on drugs. This has ranged from people defecating and having sex in the street to people squatting in backyards and parks. We are a residential community, filled with families, children and seniors who are now terrified to leave their homes and no longer feel comfortable letting their children walk to school, a friend's house or even spend time in the parks by themselves.

While I agree with the concept of a safe injection site, it is my opinion that 33 Belmont St. is not the appropriate location due to its close proximity to the Confederation Trail, which is used by hundreds of walkers and runners on a daily basis, including young children, students and seniors. A Holland College satellite campus is also directly located across the street and, most importantly, a daycare centre is also located across the street from 33 Belmont St.

These sites do sometimes help some of our most troubled and broken residents, however, is there not an equal obligation to preserve the communities of our unaddicted, non-overdosing hardworking, taxpaying residents, too? I am asking Minister Hudson to please revisit his decision to place the ODP site in the heart of my residential neighbourhood.Margaret Ann MacLean.P.E.I. Health Minister Ernie Hudson met with his counterparts from other Atlantic Canadian province's on Monday, Jan. 30.
