ICYMI: LETTERS — Nova Scotia drug plan gaps a rude awakening for retirees | SaltWire

STORY CONTINUES BELOW THESE SALTWIRE VIDEOSabout Nova Scotia Pharmacare. His conclusions mirror my own. When I turned 65 just over a year ago, I had to move to Pharmacare from my former Blue Cross provincial retiree drug plan coverage. It was a rude awakening. Two drugs I have been prescribed for years — the anticoagulant Eliquis and an anti-arthritis drug — were suddenly not covered. If I wanted them, I had to pay for them myself, at a cost of hundreds of dollars every refill.

Warfarin also apparently has unintended side-effects over the longer term. The time, effort, and inconvenience for the patient and the burden on the system of Warfarin is ignored by Pharmacare because they do not need to pay for any of that. They are only concerned with minimizing their costs. Interestingly, during the peak of the COVID crisis, Pharmacare quietly decided to cover the costs of Eliquis for a limited time since bloodwork was difficult to access. That consideration has now ended and we are back to paying for it out of pocket.

By the 1990s, due to a number of factors such as increased aging folks, more costly new compounds, and the attitude of “a pill for all ills” from demanding patients, Pharmacare costs were running amuck. The government introduced generic substitution, and eliminated some drugs from coverage in an attempt to control costs.
