Removing mature trees makes no sense in a climate emergency, this writer says.
It’s hard it’s not to agree with the letter writer as it appears the city is supportive of the removal of mature trees; in fact, pretty much anything that looks like a tree is coming down everywhere when a new development goes in.
Consider the development that used to be the old Shriners Building across from BCIT on the corner of Canada Way and Wayburne. A new housing development is going in here. All the mature trees are gone. In fact, almost every tree and anything green on the lot is gone. Why did this have to happen? Does the architect and/or builder have to remove every tree, including all the trees on the lot? Seems like overkill to me, but it’s a terrible loss for the local community as well.
Mature trees provide much more carbon reduction than new trees that will take many years to take root, if they ever do.Cathy Griffin 📢 SOUND OFF: Does more need to be done to protect trees in Burnaby? What action would you like to see taken? Share your thoughts — send us a letter.
