'The best response our government should give the premier of Quebec is to ignore his request for a meeting, just as Quebec has ignored N.L.’s territorial rights,' says Gabe Gregory of St. Philip's.

Transformers at the Upper Churchill power plant. - SaltWire Network fileThe premier of Quebec, in recent days, has been publicly stating that he wishes to commence the re-negotiation of the Churchill Falls power contract.

Quebec wants to negotiate now because, within years, it will be short of electric power to meet its needs. At expiry, in 2041, Quebec will lose about 15 per cent of its current electric supply.N.L. has been taken advantage of for decades and Quebec has reaped tens of billions of dollars from the Churchill Falls contract, while at the same time disallowing any N.L. development that would permit transmission through Quebec.

Over the lifetime of most Newfoundlanders, Quebec has maintained a stranglehold on development in Labrador. In fact, to this day, Quebec does not even recognize Labrador as part of our province. If you look at a map of Quebec on its official website, you will see that it claims the territory of Labrador as its own. It is not surprising that the court rulings over the decades are accepted by Newfoundlanders while Quebec continues to ignore the rulings that favour N.L.

The best response our government should give the premier of Quebec is to ignore his request for a meeting, just as Quebec has ignored N.L.’s territorial rights. It is an insult for Newfoundlanders to even acknowledge a request, given the blatant disregard Quebec outwardly displays to its neighbour.
