CEBU CITY — A new disqualification petition has been filed against dismissed Mandaue City mayor Jonas Cortes, challenging his bid for reelection in the upcoming 2025 polls.
The petition, the second lodged against the mayor, was filed by lawyer Ervin Estandarte on October 25 and received by the Commission on Elections on October 28. It seeks to cancel Cortes' certificate of candidacy for alleged material misrepresentation.Estandarte, a resident of Barangay Pagsabungan, contends that Cortes' CoC falsely represented his eligibility to run by marking 'Not Applicable' when asked about any existing cases or disqualification orders.
'Such entry N/A is a material representation of respondent's COC for he knew fully well that he was dismissed from service,' reads a portion in his petition.This latest petition followed the first petition filed earlier by Barangay Labogon residents Ines Corbo Necessario and Julita Oporto Narte, who both accuse Cortes of material misrepresentation.On Oct. 6, Cortes filed his CoC for reelection.
