The board of the organization that regulates Alberta lawyers is urging members to oppose a petition that would do away with mandatory legal education

The letter is signed by all 24 law society board members, known as “benchers.” Twenty benchers are elected by their peers, while the provincial government appoints the remaining four. Of the 9,769 lawyers required to complete The Path, just 26 were administratively suspended for failing to meet the October 2022 deadline, all but eight of whom later finished the course.said he worries lawyers might be required to take subsequent courses on issues such as systemic discrimination — which he does not believe exists because he was able to immigrate to Canada and become a lawyer at age 50.
In an email to fellow signatories describing his opposition to The Path, Grey said the “now well-known atrocities committed against students” had overshadowed “the many dedicated men and women who worked at Indian Residential Schools throughout much of the last century, the vast majority of whom did no harm to any of the children in their care.”
