No untoward incidents happened during the rotation and resupply mission to BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal on Thursday, the Armed Forces of the Philippines said on Friday.In a statement, the AFP said the Philippine Coast Guard helped in the regular rotation and reprovisioning of supplies to the personnel stationed at the BRP Sierra Madre. “There were no untoward incidents during the mission,” the AFP said.
Ayungin Shoal is a submerged reef in the Spratly Islands. It is located 105 nautical miles west of Palawan and is within the Philippines 200-mile exclusive economic zone .The World War II-era BRP Sierra Madre has been grounded in Ayungin Shoal since 1999. The ship has become a symbol of Philippine sovereignty in the offshore territory.China has a massive claim in the South China Sea , including the portion the Philippines refers to as the West Philippine Sea .
