MANILA - Senators Panfilo Lacson and Grace Poe on Tuesday said they prefer to prioritize providing funds to give subsidies for the poor amid the coronavirus pandemic instead of granting an P8.
6-billion monthly assistance to the aviation sector.
"Although businesses are important because they provide jobs, the weakest link is really the daily wage earners... So sila dapat talaga ang unahin ," Senate Committee on Public Services chair Grace Poe told reporters in an online press conference. "I would rather prioritize the ‘hand-to-mouths’ who are forced to lose their income, many of whom are without savings but who need to feed their families," Lacson told reporters in a text message when asked for comment.
It may be more feasible for government to give airlines "discounts" on operational fees, the senator said.
