Labor needs to pick up more seats in Queensland to give Anthony Albanese a chance of becoming prime minister, but it may do well to just hold on to its own.

Labor is losing confidence it can pick up any additional seats in the crucial battleground state of Queensland at the May 21 poll.

But at the halfway stage of the campaign, Labor – which only holds six out of 30 federal seats in Queensland — is now working to ensure there is no net loss of seats in the state.The inner-city seat of Brisbane and Longman in the northern suburbs are still seen as the best options for Labor to pick up in Queensland if its finishes the campaign strongly.

The former blue-ribbon seat of Ryan, in Brisbane’s western suburbs, is a long shot for Labor. But the demographics of the seat have changed over the past few decades with the Greens securing more than 20 per cent of the primary vote in 2019.
