THE passage of the proposed Konektadong Pinoy Act which seeks to boost competition in the Philippine telecommunications industry could result in lower internet service quality especially in underserved areas, a leading consumer advocacy group warned.
In a statement on Thursday, CitizenWatch Philippines warned that the law could inadvertently encourage telecommunication companies to cut costs and reduce investments in infrastructure in order to stay competitive in a newly deregulated market. The Konektadong Pinoy Act, also known as Senate Bill 2699, seeks to remove the requirement for telecommunication companies to secure a congressional franchise to operate.
Under the current regulatory framework, the National Telecommunications Commission oversees the telecommunication industry, ensuring that providers meet specific standards related to pricing, service quality, and consumer rights. However, if SB 2699 is passed in its current form, Oxales said the NTC's role could be significantly diminished.
