King Charles III has hosted a pre-Christmas lunch for the royal family at Windsor Castle less than one week after the second and final instalment of Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's bombshell Netflix docuseries aired.

The occasion marks the first time the monarch has put on the event, following his late mother's death in September.

About 50 members of the extended family were reportedly on this year's guest list, making it the biggest royal reunion since the Her Majesty's funeral three months ago. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex were not in attendance and it is understood they will spend the holidays with their two children Archie, three, and Lilibet, one, at their home in Montecito, California.

“The family will want to make it a very positive day after the Queen’s death and I think the Sussexes presence would most certainly dampen that,” the Sky News Australia contributor told The Sun.
