Buckingham Palace announced the trip on Thursday, revealing that the royal couple will meet Pope Francis to commemorate the 2025 Catholic Holy Year. The visit will encompass engagements in both Rome and Ravenna, according to the Palace, highlighting the robust bilateral relationship between Italy and the United Kingdom.
This marks King Charles' 17th official visit to Italy and his first overseas trip this year as he continues his cancer treatment. While full details of the itinerary are yet to be released by the Palace, British media reports suggest a visit to the Vatican's Sistine Chapel. The timing of the trip coincides with the 20th wedding anniversary of Charles and Camilla, who were married on April 9, 2005. Notably, their wedding took place the day following the funeral of Pope John Paul II, an event that Charles attended as the then heir to the throne.As the British king and the supreme governor of the Church of England, which separated from Rome in 1534, Charles has previously met Pope Francis, the head of the Catholic Church, during visits to Italy in 2017 and 2019. He has also met Popes John Paul II and Benedict XVI in the past. Queen Elizabeth, Charles' mother, also visited the Holy See in 2000 during the last Catholic Jubilee year.
