Recaptured city comes under renewed shelling as Russia also reinforces eastern town targeted by Ukraine forces

“There can be no peace plan for Ukraine that does not take into account today’s realities regarding Russian territory, with the entry of four regions into Russia,” Vladimir Putin’s spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov , said on Wednesday.

Russia’s foreign minister, Sergei Lavrov, said earlier this week that if Ukraine did not acquiesce to Russia’s territorial demands “the issue will be solved by the Russian army”. Russians are also preparing for their first new year since the beginning of a war that has split the country between a majority who have supported or acquiesced to it and a minority who have opposed it. Hundreds of thousands of Russians have fled the country since February.
