The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) has observed increased ground deformation at Kanlaon Volcano, raising concerns about a potential eruption. The volcano has been experiencing inflation or swelling in its middle to upper eastern portion since Friday evening, with a sharp increase in inflationary tilt on Friday at 7:20 p.m. PHIVOLCS noted that sulfur dioxide emissions have also increased. The volcano is currently at Alert Level 3, indicating magmatic unrest.
The Philippine Institute of Volcano logy and Seismology has noticed an increased ground deformation at Kanlaon Volcano .An advisory on Saturday afternoon stated that since Friday evening, the middle to upper portion of the eastern edifice had been experiencing inflation or swelling.There was a sharp increase in inflationary tilt at 7:20 p.m. on Friday, which meant a sudden pressure within the upper portion of the edifice.
“The overall parameters may indicate that the shallow magma conduit of the volcano is undergoing pressurization that may lead to an eruption broadly similar to the 9 December 2024 event,” the statement read.The Kanlaon Volcano, which straddles the provinces of Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, is currently at Alert Level 3 or magmatic unrest.
