The Alberta government must pay back more than $20 million dollars in royalties it wrongly collected from a pair of gas processing firms.

Taylor Processing Inc., a subsidiary of AltaGas, and Nova Chemicals paid the province a collective $20,196,482.27 since 2016, after the energy department disputed their calculations of royalties owed, claiming they had underpaid for gas refined at a plant in Harmattan.Sign up to receive daily headline news from the Calgary SUN, a division of Postmedia Network Inc.By clicking on the sign up button you consent to receive the above newsletter from Postmedia Network Inc.

The two companies used their own system at the plant for metering and reporting both types of gas, for the purpose of royalty calculations.Amounts owed are tabulated based on the volume of gas after processing, and minus the “shrinkage” that occurs when some gas is lost through the refining operation.

When the companies filed objections, a May 2017 email from the government responded that the companies’ shrinkage had not been “fairly represented,” but did not provide details.
