Alberta universities, colleges will soon be required to report free speech efforts to government ableg abpoli

One of the challenges the province has faced since 2019 is there has not been any reporting — or standard of reporting — set up since the policy came into effect. The minister said the intention is to develop a report card over the coming weeks and months. He noted every school has a different policy on free speech and this will help monitor the effectiveness of those policies.

“We don’t have that additional data,” he said. “We don’t have additional reporting information that we can look at objectively, and that’s where the report card will be able to help.”Widdowson has questioned so-called “woke” policies at universities and was fired from MRU in 2021 for questioning the Truth and Reconciliation Committee’s labelling of residential schools as an act of genocide.

“The University of Lethbridge’s mandate affirms its commitment to protect free inquiry and scholarship, facilitate access to scholarly resources, and support artistic expression and free and open scholarly discussion of issues.” The University of Calgary in an emailed statement echoed this commitment to protect “freedom of speech and supporting academic freedom,” and that it anticipates learning more about the government’s proposals in the coming days.
