An alleged member of the notorious Luffy Group, known for ATM theft schemes in Japan, was apprehended by the Bureau of Immigration in the Philippines.

SAN PABLO CITY, Laguna – The Bureau of Immigration (BI) apprehended an alleged member of the notorious Japanese criminal syndicate , the Luffy Group , in Barangay Soledad on Monday afternoon, January 27. The Japanese Embassy in Manila revealed that the suspect, along with his accomplices, employed deception to steal automated teller machine (ATM) cards from their victims.

They allegedly impersonated police officers and Local Finance Bureau employees to obtain bank cards and information under the guise of a police investigation. According to a report from the Japan National Police Agency, the suspect is identified as a member of the Luffy Group, which is believed to still be operating telecom fraud and extortion schemes in the Philippines. A warrant of arrest was issued against him by the Tokyo Summary Court on January 20, 2023, for theft in violation of Article 235 of the Japanese Penal Code. He is considered an undesirable alien who poses a risk to public safety and security as a fugitive from justice. This information was communicated to the Fugitive Search Unit by Chief Consul Makino Hideki of the Japan Embassy in Manila on February 14, 2023. Sasaki is currently in the custody of the Fugitive Search Unit while deportation proceedings are underway to facilitate his return to Japan to face charges
