TOKYO: Japan 's ruling party said on Tuesday it will select a new leader - and by extension the likely next prime minister - on Sep 27.Campaigning to become the next Liberal Democratic Party president will begin on Sep 12 with a vote two weeks later, an internal committee decided early Tuesday, a party official told AFP.
The 67-year-old has seen his poll ratings, along with the LDP, slide sharply in response to rising prices hitting Japanese incomes and several scandals.Japan’s outgoing PM Kishida did a good job, despite dismal public approval rating: AnalystsIn November last year, Kishida announced a stimulus package worth ¥17 trillion as he tried to ease the pressure from inflation and rescue his premiership.
The public support for Kishida has also been sliding amid revelations about LDP's ties to the controversial Unification Church and political donations made at party fundraising events that went unrecorded.
