Itbayat needs new warehouse, pier and runway – Lorenzana
Defense Secretary Delfin Lorenzana admitted that the disaster response of the national government to the people in the island-town of Itbayat has been “slow” due to its location.
“It took us a day before we can respond and bring in supplies to Basco and then bring these supplies again to Itbayat. We had to bring in choppers and station it in Basco so that we can airlift already the supplies, plus airlift the injured casualties to Basco hospital,” he said. Now, the construction of a supply warehouse in Itbayat is “25-percent complete,” according to Jalad, so that there would be a stockhouse of food and other primary needs for the residents in case of similar incidents in the future.
“In Itbayat, there’s an unfinished runway. Sabi ng governor iniwanan ng contractor so we reported it to DPWH. It was ordered by the President na tapusin na ‘yan ,” Lorenzana said. The event emphasized the importance of coherence, synergy, and collaboration among government and all stakeholders to achieve the overarching goal of disaster resilience amid the growing magnitude of disaster risks, such as the earthquake in Itbayat, Batanes.Meanwhile, the House of Representatives launched on Monday relief operations for Batanes with lawmakers agreeing cuts to their salaries to raise money for the earthquake victims.
