Despite having to flee his home, Neville Devete says he has no regrets after sparking Papua New Guinea's biggest corruption investigation.
The man who laid the complaint that led to Papua New Guinea's biggest corruption prosecution says he has no regrets, despite having to flee the country to protect his family.
"I laid the complaint because of my conscience and my belief that the wrong thing was happening … and it was plainly corrupt," he said. The Paraka case, or Parakagate as it became known, consumed PNG for a decade. What began as an investigation into suspicious payments from the Department of Finance to Paul Paraka Lawyers grew to threaten a prime ministership, divide the police force and fuel a student protest that made headlines around the world.
"There's not been a team [like ours] before our time and there's not been a team after our time as yet," he said. Amongst it all public discontent built up to such a level that university students protested in Port Moresby calling for Mr O'Neill's resignation and police heavy-handedly put the demonstration down.
"We've seen, especially in the anti-money laundering space, there's been a step-up in provisions and enforcement has been done," he said.
