“Juan was pretty bad over here, but we had hardly any damage – nothing like this... This is unbelievable.”
Driving along the north shore from River John to Tatamagouche on Oct. 12, the sun was shining and the water was calm, but the fallout from Fiona could be seen at every turn.
“Juan was pretty bad over here, but we had hardly any damage – nothing like this,” he said. “This is unbelievable.”Pictou West MLA Karla MacFarlane was out to McLeod’s Cottages shortly after the storm and said she was amazed at the sight of the eight cottages pushed back off their foundations and destroyed.
There's just so much what I call red tape involved in trying to help people get back up to what normal life is for them. She said there was a feeling among many residents in the rural parts of Pictou West that their concerns were ignored as damage in Cape Breton and other places seemed to garner the majority of media attention.A row of cottages on Osprey Road in Brule Point, just off Fraser Road, were left in shambles by the storm.
Strewn across the property were power tools, safety equipment and cables. Rainford himself was working underneath the house, attempting to repair the foundation. He said that due to the state of Osprey Road, no contractors are able to give him or the other residents a helping hand at the moment. Further down Brule Point Road is Brule Point Golf, a picturesque course alongside the harbour. Matt Fraiser, the general manager, said what damage the course sustained was quickly cleaned up by staff. This primarily consisted of fallen trees.
Behind the house was a barn, utterly decimated by Fiona’s might. Folded in upon itself, it only remained standing due to the trees alongside it keeping it upright.
