Storm was so powerful, it changed landscape

A shed was swept out to sea in Margaree-Fox Roost on Saturday, Sept. 24. - ContributedFor Karen Simon, the home where she grew up in Margaree has always been the place her family came together — Christmas, birthdays, christenings and all other family gatherings. But after hurricane Fiona tore through the community, one half of the local service district of Margaree-Fox Roost, less than 15 kilometres outside Port aux Basques, on Saturday, Sept. 24, the home is no longer habitable.

The garage on Mary Carter’s Margaree property collapsed on Saturday, Sept. 24, while post-tropical storm Fiona battered the south coast town. - Contributed Simon said when they went to see the house on Sunday it had shifted so much that they had to pry a door open to get in. The floor is like walking on sponge and there are marks on a door that show how high the water rose, she said.“Every day is different. Some days it’s like, ‘I’m going to rebuild; I’m going to do this.’”
