Officials across Atlantic Canada to begin assessing full scope of post-tropical storm Fiona’s damage
. Roofs were plucked off houses, trees cleaved in half and power lines knocked down by the forceful winds that persisted for hours after the storm made landfall early Saturday.
In eastern Quebec, the storm brought flooding, damage and debris to the Îles-de-la-Madeleine and Gaspé regions Saturday. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced the Canadian Armed Forces will be deployed after a request for help from Nova Scotia, where officials on Saturday reported severe damage to homes and infrastructure and residents are preparing to withstand days without electricity.
“Recovery is going to be a big effort, and we will be there to support every step of the way,” Mr. Trudeau said during a news conference, adding that Ottawa would match donations to the Red Cross made by Canadians and corporations in the next 30 days. Rene Roy, editor-in-chief of Port aux Basques publisher and news source Wreckhouse Press Inc., said he saw at least nine structures that had been pulled into the ocean.
“When you live in a seaport town, there’s a lot of things you expect,” he said. “But I haven’t experienced anything like this before.” Earlier on Saturday, the Canadian Hurricane Centre forecasted the storm to bring in 100 to 200 millimetres of rain across much of Atlantic Canada and eventually eastern Quebec. The CHC said it recorded an unofficial pressure of 931.6 millibars this morning, which made it the lowest pressure for a landfalling storm on record in the country and spoke to the severity of the weather.
