Visitors to one of the city’s busiest beaches were in shock when lifeguards and two men became involved in a wild confrontation.

Kensington resident Tom Davies was just rubbing some factor-50 into his shoulders at Coogee Beach on Sunday — as the mercury hit a balmy top of 26C in the early afternoon — when he heard wild yelling from behind him.

He told news.com.au beachgoers turned their heads and held their breath collectively as a man loudly argued with lifeguards.Source:Supplied A Randwick City Council spokeswoman said its lifeguards approached the man at the packed beach — and alleged he “appeared heavily intoxicated and was witnessed being abusive to other beachgoers”.“He picked up a bag from the beach, and when lifeguards asked him to verify it belonged to him, he became violent.”Mr Davies said it appeared as though the mystery member of the public was trying to calm things down, but the other man continued to try and walk off with the bag.

“It was a pretty shocking thing to see at such a crowded beach,” he said. “It’s not really the type of thing you expect to see when you’re rubbing in suncream.”
