The K to 12 curriculum is now the proverbial punching bag of education reform in the Philippines: attacked from all sides, criticized by politicians, misunderstood by the public, and often left unsupported by those tasked to implement it. But amid the growing hostility toward K to 12, we need to pause and consider that perhaps the problem isn't K to 12 itself.
English proficiency is prized not because it enables deeper understanding, but because it increases the likelihood of being hired abroad. Our domestic job market, on the other hand, failed to provide jobs for those on vocational tracks in senior high school due to the lack of industry linkages and government support. Even the government itself did not have items for K to 12 graduates.
