UPDATED. The attack underlines fears of an escalation in violence after months of clashes in the West Bank.
JERUSALEM, Israel – A possible shooting attack wounded two people in Jerusalem on Saturday, January 28, as Israel’s military said it was boosting its forces in the occupied West Bank after a Palestinian gunman shot dead seven people near a synagogue on the outskirts of the city.
Israeli police said that the gunman in Friday’s attack was a 21-year-old Palestinian resident of East Jerusalem who appeared to have acted alone in carrying out the attack in an area that Israel annexed to Jerusalem after the 1967 Middle East war. “Following an IDF situational assessment, it was decided to reinforce the Judea and Samaria Division with an additional battalion,” the military said.Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin NetanyahuFollowing an assessment with security authorities, Netanyahu urged people not to take the law into their own hands but said measures had been decided and cabinet would meet on Saturday.
Lebanon’s Iran-backed group Hezbollah praised the attack and a spokesperson for the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas hailed it as “a response to the crime conducted by the occupation in Jenin and a natural response to the occupation’s criminal actions.”Illustrating the potential for further escalation, the Palestinian health ministry said on Friday three Palestinians were taken to hospital after being shot by an Israeli settler in an incident near the northern West Bank city of Nablus.
